Cool Scandi coffee shop
Step away from Starbucks! If you walk just a few minutes off the beaten track, you'll find the Scandinavian Coffee Pod, a slice of coffee nirvana in Cheltenham tucked away behind The Prom just waiting to filleth your cup!
Ever since Tyler Brûlé first showcased oh-so-cool Scandinavian style inside the pages of Wallpaper* back in the dotcom 1990s, the love-in with the region’s sleek, modernist interiors has just kept growing and growing. But I never knew the Scandis had coffee totally nailed too! And where did I discover this? Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo? No, Cheltenham! Tucked away in Royal Well Place, a mere skip away from the town’s best shopping strip The Promenade, is The Scandinavian Coffee Pod which looks great on the outside, even better on the inside and serves the most incredible coffee.
The ‘pod’ is a cute 5 sq m yellow steel and glass construction that used to stand alone and serve takeaways, but last summer was craned in to become the entrance point to a refurbed former garage. A corrugated iron wall and bare bulb pendant lights stylishly reference its roots, while blond wood, Eames chairs and retro desk lights on the tables strike the right cosy but minimalist note.
The space has a really comfortable, homey feel about it and, if you’re a homeworker, this really would be worth getting out of the pyjamas for as it feels like the kind of place where you could get down to some deep thinking. And, of course, the superlative coffee, which is hand-roasted on the premises in the Nordic manner – lightly roasted for a softer, fruitier taste – would keep you buzzing all day long.
It’s also a great shopping trip pitstop being so close to The Prom where you can find The White Company, Russell & Bromley, Jigsaw, Hobbs and Joules, among others, but just far enough away to ensure you get a seat and a chilled-out vibe. It’s definitely a coffee and cake kind of place rather than a lunching venue and, if you’re with small people, I’d say a discreet babe in arms would fit in nicely (though space is quite tight, so a massive buggy might be a problem), while a lively toddler could make you explode with stress if it started careering around the immaculate space (you never see kids in Wallpaper*, eh?).
