Our new fave restaurant in town, The Looking Glass, introduces “Farm to Fork” cooking with an emphasis on local produce from the Cotswolds. It’s a really exciting new venture from husband-and-wife team behind the Sixways Wine Bar coming together with chef/patron Leon Rook, bringing a seriously innovative new restaurant concept to Cheltenham. A mere stiletto’s throw from the centre of town with its fab shopping and theatres, The Looking Glass focuses on fresh, local, seasonal and…wait for it…foraged produce prepared using traditional and modern cooking methods.
Whilst considering names for the restaurant, the clever team researched the history of Charlton Kings and discovered that Lewis Carroll’s famous adventure ‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’, was written when he was staying in Cudnall Street. And, ta da! This theme perfectly reflected their vision for the restaurant – tracing the journey of food and then reinventing it into magical, delicious dishes.
The restaurant is clearly part of the community already, with meat and dairy from organic farms in Gloucestershire and some food even foraged in local woods. They also have a deal with local allotment holders where if they bring them any surplus produce that would otherwise go to waste, they will take it in exchange for a discount voucher to use at the restaurant, plus they get a mention on the menu. Blooming brilliant idea, we say!
Food-wise, choose from Beef and Chips, venison, onion tart, surf and turf, even roasted ling in cabbage, with smaller plates including beef tartare, hand-dived scallops, mushrooms on toast and Last of the Spring Lamb.
In their words, ‘Our dream was to open a restaurant that showcased the best of the Cotswolds. That dream has become a reality. Our food is always fresh. Always free range. Always organic. We regularly head out into the countryside to forage for wild produce that is full of flavour and taste, and everything we do is inspired by the seasons.’ I think that says it all, don’t you?
