Autumn School Open Days

There's no time like the present to book in those school Open Days for the autumn...Don't sweat it, Muddy's got it covered

Malvern College, Open Day 21 March and 16 May 2020, Scholarship Information Morning 6 June 2020

A co-educational day and full boarding school for ages 13-18, set in a beautiful 250-acre campus with some seriously *wow* facilities. Malvern College is in the top 16% of the country for adding value at A level and IB, with pupils split evenly across both programmes. Oh, and they have a very impressive new Head. This is certainly a school going places, so watch this space. Find out for yourself at their Open Days next spring on 21 March and 16 May, but if you’d like a snoop around in the meantime, do get in touch with them.

Malvern College, College Road, Malvern WR14 3DF, Tel: 01684 581500, www.malverncollege.org.uk

Abberley Hall School, Open Day 5 October

A day and full boarding school (with some flexible options) for boys and girls aged 2 to 13, set in 90 acres of wooded grounds amid truly stunning countryside. Immediately obvious strengths are the happy and caring atmosphere, small teaching groups and excellent facilities. Forget tough, traditional and old-fashioned, Abberley is friendly and warm, with energetic children, approachable staff and a relaxed (not too relaxed, mind!) atmosphere. Find out for yourself at their Open Day on Sat 5 October.

Abberley Hall School, Worcester WR6 6DD, Tel: 01299 896275, www.abberleyhall.co.uk

The Downs Malvern, Bank Holiday Monday 4 May, 2020

We are particularly impressed by this vibrant day, weekly, flexi- and full-boarding prep. Catering for girls and boys aged 3 – 13 years, it is part of the Malvern College Family of Schools, and set within its own seriously impressive 55-acre campus on the side of the Malvern Hills (quite literally). Big ticks go to their tip-top teaching, and fantastic extra-curricular, boarding and sports facilities, (including a multi-million-pound sports hall, no less). Plus, we have never come across a school that actually has its own miniature railway on site! Built in 1925, the Downs Light Railway gives pupils an amazing opportunity to build, operate and maintain a working steam railway, complete with tunnel, station and points. How fab is that? Find out more at their Open Day on Bank Holiday Monday 4th May, 09-30 – 16.30.

Bredon School, nr Tewkesbury, Open Mornings Sat 5 October and Wed 20 November

An independent boarding and day school for boys and girls aged 7 to 18, situated in gorgeous Gloucestershire countryside. A small, family school, they enjoy a happy and supportive atmosphere and offer a particular focus on supporting children with dyslexia. They are also able to support dyspraxia, dyscalculia and dysgraphia, and mild-to-moderate levels of ADHD and autism. The school’s motto is ‘Come Alive and Thrive’ – truly an ethos that is borne out in each pupil’s love of learning. Looking for a school that really helps children to realise their potential? With specialist teaching and by offering pupils a huge number of activities, opportunities, subjects, experiences and rewards, the school helps restore confidence and self-belief. Find out for yourself at their Open Mornings on Sat 5 October and Wed 20 November. Read our review here.

The Elms, Malvern, Open Day Thurs 26 Sep

A co-ed day and boarding school for ages 2-13 – a small-ish prep in the stunning setting of the Malvern Hills with a true family atmosphere; a school that celebrates diversity and where the wellbeing of the child is central to everything they do. ‘Character is forged in the furnace of failure’, they say – children are not afraid of trying anything and everything, and of course they learn the most when things go wrong! We love the school farm and equine centre, but find out for yourself at their Open Day on Thurs 26 September 10am-12pm, and then stay on to experience The Elms School Show. To register your interest fill in the form on their website www.elmsschool.co.uk. For further information contact Jess Hattam on registrar@elmsschool.co.uk or phone 01684 540344.

Thought of going to uni in the States? Let me start again…Is your teen thinking of university in the States and you’re falling off your chair in a panic over the fees? We’ve picked the brains of Laurence Goodwin, International Universities Coordinator at Wycliffe College, to see just how feasible college on the other side of the pond can be.

St David’s College, Llandudno, Open day 7 Oct and 18 Nov

St David’s College, a co-ed day and boarding school for ages 9-19 set in the beautiful surroundings of Llandudno. The school is a breath of fresh air – far from trumpeting exam results, this is a magical place where community is of the essence. The school places huge value on supporting each other, sport, art and (how cool is this?) 4×4 off road driving in a spectacularly battered old Land Rover. Find out for yourself at their Open Days on Mondays 7 Oct and 18 Nov, from 10am. Sign up here for your place www.stdavidscollege.co.uk/openday.

Hatherop Castle, a co-ed day and boarding prep school near Cirencester, is a super happy school for ages two to 13 with impressive results and Hogwarts-style looks. Find out for yourself by reading our review here. They do Open Days brilliantly here – think themes such as A Voyage of Historical Discovery where prospective pupils go on a journey through Hatherop Castle’s early monastic days, through Tudor plotting and onto its time as a Second World War training camp for the Danish resistance. You get to play Cluedo in French, join the Danish resistance and become WWII code breakers, discover what life was like for monks when the Castle was a monastery, and sample Indian delights.
