Interiors newsflash

Lucky us, we've now got two fabulous places to track down quirky antiques and retro goodies – the Malt House Emporium AND The Malthouse Collective!

If you were upset at the recent departure of the MALT HOUSE EMPORIUM in Salmon Springs just outside Stroud, dry your tears sister! For the treasure trove for all things antiquey, quirky and a little bit different has risen like a phoenix in a new home within spitting distance of junction 9 on the M5 near Tewkesbury.

Housed in a whopper, aircraft carrier-style space (loads of parking, so you can fit that van you’ll be wanting), all the Emporium goodies are still there with added extras too, including the Malt House Emporium’s new, own brand bath and body range. Owner Helen Tweddle, who opened Malt House Emporium three years ago after retiring from a career in banking in London and finding she was bored (can I have your life please Helen?), is on a mission to switch the younger generation on to the unique personality and soul of buying antiques, retro finds and one-off pieces – ‘no more cookie-cutter interiors’ is her warrior cry, so fall in troops and go have a mooch. Here’s a smorgasbord to whet your appetite.

Malt House Emporium, Unit 2, Tewkesbury Retail Park, Ashchurch Road, Northway Gate, Ashchurch, Glos, GL20 8JP. Tel: 01684 423150. Email:

Meanwhile, over at Salmon Springs there’s cause for jubilation too, for on Sunday (5 November) THE MALTHOUSE COLLECTIVE moved in banishing fears that the atmospheric, 1920s beer-bottling factory was going to be transformed into office space.

Once again packed full of covetable objets, The Collective is all about bringing dealers and makers together to make them bigger and better than the sum of their parts. Leading this new vision is former TV, marketing and advertising lady Lindsey Butcher, who got into antiques when she converted a barn and realised what fun it was ferreting out cool finds for her new home. It’s a diverse space with antiques rubbing shoulders with bespoke brands and there are plans to get makers into the vast basement to do their thing, so you’ll be able to watch them at work. Lindsey is all about keeping it fresh, so she’s on the lookout for creative types who have something to offer. It’s a collective people, so don’t be shy!

The Malthouse Collective, Salmon Springs, Painswick Road, Stroud, Glos GL6 6NU. Tel: 07977 268364.
