Best foot forward
15 ways to rock your footwear this month, from garden parties and weddings to the ultimate girls' night out.
Another few weeks to enjoy the events season, and hurray to drinking Champagne al fresco all night long, I say. Less exciting though is the perennial problem of what darn shoes to wear – I’m firmly of the opinion that footwear can make or break a fancy outfit in the summer. Go too sexy, high and frivolous and it’s swollen ankles and blister central by 6pm, go too sturdy and you look like a matron pounding the wards. Or plump for stilettos on soft grass and you risk sinking in and falling flat on your face – I actually did this once!
Fear not though, we are here to help with the Muddy guide to summer shoe success, whatever the occasion.
GOING TO …
A GARDEN PARTY
Let’s assume it’s a posh one rather than you drinking tinnies while your kids go feral in the paddling pool (hey, were you spying on me at the weekend?!). You won’t be doing much walking and hopefully you’ll be taxi-ing it door to door, so time to crack out something fabulous and a bit out there!
… A FESTIVAL
Take it from a 1990s Glastonbury survivor, for a start don’t wear flip flops – you’ll lose one in the mud/ moshpit. And don’t go for anything open-toed because some drunken fool will definitely step on your feet at some point. Trainers are your festival friend and happily this season, there are a million and one options.
… A SUMMER WEDDING
They might feel comfy now but what about in 14 hours’ time when you’re staggering around the dance floor to Come On Eileen while trying to swerve the bride’s gropey uncle? It’s gotta be a mid-height heel or a wedge all the way for weddings. And metallics or animal print work with most dresses – ideal if you’ve got a whole bunch of bashes to attend in one summer.
… THE RACES
This is tricky – you’ll most likely be dressed up to the nines but you’ll be standing on grass all day so anything too high or spiky is a no-no. But I bet (geddit?) these ones bridge the gap between elegance and practical.
… A GIRLS’ NIGHT OUT
Who cares about practicality?! You’re going to need stilettos, bling and a whole lot of swagger. Don’t forget to load up that clutch bag with Berocca (pre-empt that hangover!), your super-pro Compeed blister plasters (because let’s face it, it will happen and you’ll be hobbling like a witch otherwise) and a head for hedonism!
