The Daneway, Sapperton
Muddy says: We almost don’t want to share this hidden treasure with you – but hey, that would be bad karma and we don’t want any of that! So here you go – fill your boots!
Tucked away in deepest, most gorgeous Sapperton Valley surrounded by three nature reserves with the Severn & Thames canal tow path running through the garden, you couldn’t ask for a more idyllic setting for a public house. It’s the kind of place you see and start praying to God that it lives up to the expectations of the setting. And, thank you Lord, it does. In spades.
Owners Poppy and Marcus have turned the one-time rural boozer into a gastro pit stop that could give swanky city eateries a run for their money. But, hurrah!, the rural boozer charm is still there, with locals coming in for a drink, a sarnie, a meal and/or just a natter. Being in such a bucolic setting, it’s also a favourite with ramblers who need to refuel. Talking of which, the food! Poppy and Marcus are passionate about sourcing from the best suppliers, which includes their own The Four Seasons Meat Company in Cirencester. And Marcus, formerly a butcher, cooks meat, vegetables and the pub’s famous espetadas kebabs on a super-duper charcoal grill, which produces unbelievable flavours that transport you to a Greek island in a mouthful. And if the weather is of the Mediterranean variety, there’s a fabulous garden to eat in, but if it’s being British, the pub’s welcoming interiors with wood burners and cosy nooks are just the place to escape the elements. In a word, The Daneway is perfecto!
