Nail your style

Thought M&S was just for knickers and ready meals? Think again! These super-chic, Chanel-inspired Autograph nail polishes are well worth a detour to the beauty hall.

We don’t tend to think of M&S as a make-up Mecca but their once-neglected beauty halls are getting better and better, with a fantastic mix of cult brands and impressive own label products. These Autograph nail polishes, which have been adorning my fingers for the past few weeks, are a case in point. For starters, they remind me a teeny bit of Chanel ones – a coincidence, I’m sure *cough* – with their chic square glass bottle design. But they cost just £6 rather than around twenty quid.

Of the 13 shades in the All In One range, I was sweet on Bitter Cocoa. Admittedly it looks a bit boring in the bottle but I found it a nice change from my trademark deep red, and the warm chocolately tones complement all the pretty pink Spring pieces that are everywhere right now.

What else? They have a pleasingly fat brush – and I do love a fat brush. It sounds counterintuitive but it makes for a neater application. The formula contains argan oil and vitamin E to nourish peeling, winter-worn nails. (Nail care is a growth area in the beauty biz because so many women have wrecked their nails from gel manicures, donchaknow.)

My only issue is the all-in-one thang – it’s supposedly a base coat, top coat and colour, but I found I needed a separate top coat to avoid premature chipping. But I guess if you’re in a rush – and let’s face, when aren’t we? – you could skip it.

Definitely one to throw in the basket next time you’re stocking up on big pants (I won’t tell anyone) or those insanely calorific choc puddings (ditto), I reckon.
