The Urban Guide to the Countryside

Feels like summer

5 Feb 2017

The languid, hazy days of summer feel like a looong way off, but, hey, why not cheer yourself up and get some dates in the diary to give you something to look forward to on these dark, winter nights?

Giffords Circus, various locations, 12 May-24 September

Riffing to the theme ‘Any Port in a Storm’, the Gloucestershire born and bred Giffords Circus will be touring the country this summer with its baroque, magical realism meets nostalgia trip show featuring a Cuban troupe, a Hungarian Csikos rider, a Ukrainian flyer, Tweedy the Clown and the very funky Giffords Circus band (a surreal cross between The Doors and the show band from The Voice). A roaring tempest of a show. Not to be missed.

Wychwood Music festival, Cheltenham Racecourse, 2-4 June

This family-friendly outing at Cheltenham Racecourse is ticking pretty much all the boxes: over 100 bands – including The Levellers, Billy Bragg, OMD (staggers backwards at blast from the past) –comedy gigs, real ale, a kids literature festival (!), artisan food, and idyllic camping nestling under the hills of Prestbury. I’m in.

Forestlive, Westonbirt, Tetbury, 15-18 June

A summer concert series organised by the Forestry Commission? Um, yeah crazy cats, rock on! Forestlive is being held this summer at the beautiful Westonbirt Arboretum in Tetbury with Elbow, Craig David, Olly Murs and Rick Astley all on the ticket, which, by the way, are already selling out, so don’t sit on your hands people.

Little Mix at Kingsholm Stadium, Gloucester, 24 June

The millennial generation’s answer to the Spice Girls will be shaking their booties at Kingsholm Stadium in Gloucester as part of their Summer Shout Out tour in June. Not just for teens and tweenies, I defy anyone not to sing along (if you’ve got an ex to excise, you know what you need to holler). Go on, try it in the shower when the mudlets aren’t listening.

Soul Circus, Elmore, near Gloucester, 18-20 August

Soul Circus, a yoga and wellness festival held on the banks of the River Severn, will make its second outing this summer. Go along and throw your asanas in yin, rocket and aerial (could be interesting) classes, among many others; chill and rave to live music; munch on healthy delights; and drink, not just juices (don’t worry), but ale, cider, wine and the Soul Circus cocktail too (phew!). Expect tippees, yoga experts, peace, love and harmony.
